Chiropractic first started in 1895 when D.D. Palmer adjusted a man's misaligned vertebrae to restore the hearing of a man who had been deaf for 17years. Chiropractic has now expanded to preventative health measures to relief of chronic pain. Chiropractic was recognized by the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, in 1994, when they recommended that chiropractic manipulation was an effective treatment for acute back pain. Chiropractic is now recommended first instead of invasive procedures such as drugs and surgery. Chiropractic's early philosophy was rooted in vitalise, spiritual inspiration and rationalism. A philosophy based on deduction from irrefutable helped distinguish chiropractic from medicine, provided it with legal and political defences against claims of practicing medicine without a license, and allowed chiropractors to establish themselves as an autonomous profession. This "straight" philosophy, taught to generations of chiropractors, rejects the reasoning of the scientific method, and relies on deductions from vitalistic first principles rather than on the materialism of science. Chiropractic is based on the thought that manipulating the neuromusculoskeletal system maintains overall health. Chiropractors believe the pinnacle of someone's health is in their spine. Health problems are caused by spinal dysfunction interfering with the nervous system called subluxations. In treating these misalignments, chiropractors will do a spinal adjustment by putting pressure on the spine in hopes of alleviating the symptoms of the patient. These symptoms include but are not limited to chronic pain, whiplash, headaches and migraines, ear infection, and chronic fatigue. Spinal manipulation restores the body’s mobility and allows it to heal. Chiropractic medicine is an alternative, and often referred to as complementary, approach to treating spine problems through positively affecting a person's nervous system. The profession believes that a dysfunctional spinal joint interferes with a person's nervous system which can lead to ill health. Chiropractic is touted as safer than drugs or surgery. This may seem self-evident but it isn't even true. Some chiropractors have seriously harmed children and adults by their risky procedures, some of which have. Things could get even worse if the current push by chiropractors to become primary care practitioners for infants and children is successful. Paediatrics is much riskier than manipulating the spine of a middle-aged man who is there because he doesn't want surgery and he wants to play golf that afternoon. A 2003 survey of North American chiropractors found that 88% wanted to retain the term vertebral subluxation complex, and that when asked to estimate the percent of disorders of internal organs (such as the heart, the lungs, or the stomach) that subluxation significantly contributes to, the mean response was 62%.[34] In 2005, the chiropractic subluxation was defined by the World Health Organization as "a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity." This differs from the medical definition of subluxation as a significant structural displacement, which can be seen with static imaging techniques such as X-rays.[21]Attorney David Chapman-Smith, Secretary-General of the World Federation of Chiropractic, has stated that "subluxations are not structural entities and cannot be detected on x ray Upon entering chiropractic program a student must have a bachelor's degree or 90 semester hours in classes like life sciences and humanities. The Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) requires a chiropractor to have a minimum of 4,200 hours of laboratory, classroom, and clinical experience to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. In order to graduate students must have successfully completed five years of school and passed four national board exams. They then have the option to continue schooling to be certified in specialty areas. These areas include: • Chiropractic Diagnostic Imaging • Chiropractic Rehabilitation • Chiropractic Clinical Nutrition • Chiropractic Diagnosis and Management of Internal Disorders • Chiropractic Orthopaedics • Chiropractic Clinical Neurology • Chiropractic Sports Physician. Other areas that Chiropractors can specialize in are: • Acupuncture • Anti-Aging • Homeopathy • Pain Management • Paediatrics
